Summer’s sizzle can take a lot out of everybody and everything, including your car. Yes, we know your vehicle is an inanimate object. But, if the high temps are affecting you, your pets, your air conditioning bills, your plants, and your desire to go outside, imaging what extreme temperatures are doing to your car, truck, van, or SUV.
If you want your vehicle to survive summertime temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, we have a few tips for you to consider:
Protect your paint.
Car paint will fade in regular, everyday sunshine. That’s a given. However, soaring temperatures can make a car’s paint job deteriorate faster, or even make it peel. Avoid paint sunburn by coating your car with a fine layer of wax or paint sealant. Not only will it protect the paint from fading, but it’ll also help fend off scratches and swirls made by road debris and dirt.
Park in the shade.
Shade is your car’s friend during the heat of the day. Many people fight for the best-shaded spot in the parking lot, so do your best to show up early and park under trees to help your car stay cool.
Crack the windows open.
Many wise men and women from the Tempe and Greater Phoenix Metro Area know this trick when they park their car under the Summer sun. When temperatures soar, it’s smart to crack open the windows so the rubber trim around the windows doesn’t melt to the glass.
Service your automobile’s air conditioning system.
If your vehicle’s A/C unit is blowing hot, smells funny, or is leaking refrigerant, those are good signs that your vehicle needs air conditioning service. Regular maintenance of your automobile’s A/C system is not only smart, and it’ll make traveling during the summer months more bearable.
Park in the garage.
We understand a lot of people use their garage as an extra storage space. In fact, we’re guilty of this at our own homes. But if you want to protect your vehicle, you would be wise to remove all that clutter from the garage and clear a space to park your vehicle. In fact, that’s such good advice, we’ll be sure to tackle this chore over the weekend. :-)
Protect the interior.
Do what you need to protect the interior from the heat. Use interior sun shades and place them over all the windows, if possible. Use a full car cover if needed. Be sure to remove any important articles from your car that are likely to melt, like plastic-framed sunglasses, plastic bottles, toiletries, and perishable foods. If you don’t, you might want to run an experiment and see how long it’ll take to bake a batch of cookies on your dashboard. At least your car will have that nice, freshly-baked scent. :-)
