How to Keep Your Car from Overheating

It’s August, and it’s HOT! We all love summer, but our cars can’t always keep up. If you’re headed out for a road trip this summer, or just trying to survive the busy commute, you’ll want to make sure you’re prepared for the chance of your car overheating. This is a nuisance that is easily preventable with standard auto repair maintenance!

Check Your Fluids: Make sure that all fluids are topped up. Do this early and often, and always before a trip longer than 2 hours. This is one easy way to head off problems before they start, and it gives you and your mechanic a good idea of what’s going on with your vehicle and how quickly it’s consuming these fluids.

Forewarned is forearmed: If you get stuck at the side of the road with a vehicle that is overheating, you’ll need to replenish water--for yourself, and for your car. Keep extra water for both purposes in the trunk. Also, keep an extra gallon of coolant in the trunk.

Educate yourself: Learn about the signs and symptoms of overheating. And, work with your mechanic to figure out what you need to be mindful of for your make and model of vehicle in particular.

Limit AC use: We know it’s hard during summer, but limiting your AC use and instead using fresh air circulation through windows will help keep your car’s engine from overheating. Try alternating every 15 minutes or so.
