What Goes Into an Emergency-Preparedness Kit for Your Car

While you may be stuck inside the house right around now, it’s the perfect time to get your car ready for those summertime adventures on the horizon! Summertime fun all starts with being prepared, which is why you should always have an emergency-preparedness kit in your car. Read on for some essentials your kit should always include.

Your vehicle should always include an emergency-preparedness kit, kept in the trunk. Make sure to check this every six months, and replace any expired items. While there are several types of items you may want, there are a few universal items you should always include.

First, you’ll want to keep some routine car essentials. That includes an inflated spare tire, wheel wrench, and tripod jack for any flats that you might encounter down the road. Jumper cables and a tool kit will also come in handy, should your battery die or some other smaller issue result. A flashlight and extra batteries are always a good idea, especially if you get stranded out at night. You’ll also want to have reflective triangles and a bright fabric or reflective vest to make you and your car stand out to other drivers.

Safety-related items are next on the list, and include a fully stocked first aid kit, a warm blanket, nonperishable high-energy foods like nuts, power bars, and dried fruits, and water should you get stranded overnight. As mentioned previously, these items should be checked regularly and switched out if approaching their expiration dates.

Miscellaneous items to add to your kit may include a fire extinguisher, duct tape, a rain poncho, a car charger for your phone, and a compass. Depending on the weather where you are, you may also want to bring warm clothes, cat litter (for traction), and potentially a small shovel.

Feel free to add any other staple supplies you feel you might need, and pack that kit! That way, no matter where you’re headed, you and your family can feel safe and secure knowing you have your emergency-preparedness kit ready.
